chapter 1

Darbhanga.

One of the most infamous cities in Bihar.

A city where power wasn't measured by law...

It was measured by fear.

People often joked that the police existed only on paper because, in reality, the streets belonged to someone else. Every alley, every market, every business, every heartbeat of the city moved according to one man's permission.

And everyone knew his name.

Outside the city's largest police station, two constables lazily sat on worn-out wooden chairs, sipping tea as if it were just another ordinary afternoon. Both looked to be around twenty-seven years old, their uniforms slightly wrinkled from the unbearable summer heat.

One of them leaned back and sighed.

"Did you hear, Sharma Sir? The old ASP is finally being transferred today."

The other constable burst into laughter before taking another sip of tea.

"I knew Chopra wouldn't survive here for long."

"He made the biggest mistake the day he arrived."

"He dared to go against Vikraal Dada."

Sharma shook his head before continuing with a sarcastic smile.

"And everyone knows what happens to those who point a finger at Vikraal Dada."

"He doesn't just break that finger..."

"He uproots the entire hand."

"So tell me..."

"How was one ASP supposed to survive?"

Raghu nodded immediately.

"You're absolutely right, Sharma Sir."

"If I'm not mistaken..."

"Chopra is the fifteenth ASP to be transferred from Darbhanga this year alone."

The two men exchanged another knowing smile.

Fifteen officers.

One city.

Not a single one had managed to stay.

Just then, the station's Sub-Inspector walked toward them, twirling his lathi in one hand.

"Enough with your gossip."

"You two can continue your village meeting later."

"Our new ASP will be arriving shortly."

The two constables immediately stood up and saluted.

"Yes, Sir!"

The moment they heard another ASP was coming...

They looked at each other before struggling to hide their laughter.

Both of them already knew how this story would end.

No officer had ever survived in Darbhanga for more than a month.

Raghu couldn't resist asking,

"Sir... what's the new ASP's name?"

"And when will they arrive?"

The Sub-Inspector rolled his eyes.

"Why are you two so curious?"

"They'll arrive when they're supposed to."

"Besides..."

"These senior officers only know how to order everyone around."

"They'll learn the reality of this city soon enough."

Without waiting for another question, he walked back inside the station.

The two constables silently watched him leave.

Then Sharma muttered under his breath,

"Let's see..."

"How many days this one lasts."

At the same time...

A young woman walked through the crowded streets of Darbhanga with a teenage boy beside her.

The city market was overflowing with life.

Vendors shouted from every corner.

Children laughed while running between stalls.

The aroma of fresh samosas mixed with the smell of spices drifting through the air.

Everything looked lively.

Everything looked peaceful.

But appearances...

Could be dangerously deceptive.

The boy walking beside the girl suddenly grabbed her sleeve.

"Jiji Maa..."

"Where are we even going?"

"We've only just arrived..."

"And I'm already exhausted."

The young woman looked at his dramatically exhausted face before laughing softly.

"Ved..."

"How can you get tired so quickly?"

"We've barely walked for ten minutes."

Ved immediately puffed out his cheeks.

"Not everyone is a police officer like you."

"Please..."

"Have some mercy on this poor little child."

She smiled helplessly.

This young woman was none other than Abhavya Mehra...

The heroine of this story.

Twenty-three years old.

An IPS officer recently appointed as the new Assistant Superintendent of Police of Darbhanga.

Her flawless fair skin, shoulder-length brown hair, deep black eyes, sharp nose, and naturally pink lips made her look more like a professional model than a police officer.

Yet beneath that beautiful face...

Was a woman with unwavering determination.

Beside her walked the only family she had left.

Her younger brother...

Ved Mehra.

Five years younger than her and a first-year college student.

After losing their parents, Abhavya had become everything to him.

His sister.

His guardian.

His family.

His entire world.

The siblings continued walking through the crowded marketplace.

Ved looked around excitedly.

"Jiji Maa..."

"This place is actually beautiful."

"There are so many people."

"So many shops."

"I think Sumitra Aunty scared me for no reason."

"She kept saying this city isn't safe for us."

Abhavya slowly scanned the bustling market.

Unlike Ved...

She wasn't looking at the colorful shops.

She was observing something else.

The frightened expressions hidden behind forced smiles.

The unusual silence whenever certain vehicles passed by.

The fear buried deep inside everyone's eyes.

This city...

Was hiding something.

Placing a gentle hand on Ved's shoulder, she spoke quietly,

"Whether this city is good or bad..."

"Only time will tell."

"And I have a feeling..."

"It has already prepared something for us."

The moment those words left her lips...

A loud scream echoed across the entire marketplace.

"Forgive me, Dada!"

"I made a mistake!"

"Please!"

"Just this once..."

"Spare my life!"

Abhavya instinctively turned toward the sound.

A black jeep sped across the road at terrifying speed.

Behind it...

A man had been tied with thick ropes and was being dragged mercilessly across the asphalt.

His body scraped violently against the road.

Blood stained the street behind him.

He screamed in unbearable pain...

Begging for mercy with every breath.

Yet...

Not a single person moved.

The crowded marketplace had fallen eerily silent.

Hundreds of people watched the horrifying scene.

Nobody stepped forward.

Nobody dared interfere.

It was as though they had already accepted that saving him was impossible.

Abhavya stood frozen for only a second.

Disbelief filled her eyes.

How could someone openly drag a man through the middle of the city...?

In broad daylight...?

Without fear of the police...?

But what shocked her even more...

Was the crowd.

Not one person tried to help.

Not one person even shouted.

They simply watched.

As if this had become normal.

The desperate screams of the injured man echoed through the marketplace once again.

"Please..."

"Dada..."

"I'll never make this mistake again!"

Abhavya's fists clenched.

She couldn't stand there and watch any longer.

Without another thought, she immediately stepped toward the speeding jeep.

Before she could take another step...

Ved grabbed her wrist tightly.

His voice trembled.

"Jiji Maa..."

"Please don't."

"Those people look extremely dangerous."

"Look around..."

"Nobody here is trying to stop them."

"There has to be a reason."

Abhavya gently placed her hand against his cheek.

A reassuring smile appeared on her face.

"Nothing will happen to me."

"And more importantly..."

"I'm an ASP."

"If I ignore someone asking for help..."

"Then I have no right to wear this uniform."

She softly ruffled his hair.

"Stay here."

"Start the timer."

"I'll be back before it finishes."

Without waiting for another reply...

Abhavya Mehra walked straight toward the speeding jeep.

Unaware...

That with this single decision...

She was about to declare war against the most feared man in Darbhanga.

The jeep tore through the crowded streets at terrifying speed.

Without wasting another second, Abhavya reached behind her waist and pulled out her service revolver. Her sharp eyes locked onto the rear tire of the speeding vehicle.

She took a deep breath.

One shot.

Bang!

The bullet sliced through the air before striking the tire with perfect precision.

The jeep instantly lost balance, swerving violently across the road before finally screeching to a halt.

For a brief moment...

The entire marketplace fell silent.

Then chaos erupted.

People began whispering frantically.

"Who fired at Dada's jeep?"

"Has someone gone mad?"

"Whoever did this..."

"They're dead."

"No one survives after challenging Dada."

Inside the jeep, the driver's expression darkened.

A terrifying voice echoed through the street.

"Who..."

"...has dared challenge Vikraal in his own city?"

The driver kicked the door open and stepped out.

He wasn't just another gangster.

He was Vikraal.

The man whose name alone was enough to make Darbhanga tremble.

Thirty-two years old.

Six feet five inches tall.

Broad shoulders.

A powerful build.

Fair complexion.

A rugged beard.

And blood-red eyes that always looked as though they were suppressing uncontrollable rage.

His mere presence was enough to silence an entire crowd.

Nobody called him by his name anymore.

To the people of Darbhanga...

He was simply...

Dada.

Vikraal slowly scanned the crowd before roaring once again,

"Who had the courage..."

"...to fire at my jeep?"

By now, dozens of people had gathered around.

Yet nobody dared answer.

Nobody wanted to become the next target.

Then...

The crowd slowly parted.

A young woman stepped forward.

Police uniform.

Revolver still in her hand.

Fearless eyes staring straight into Vikraal's.

Without the slightest hesitation, she replied,

"I did."

"So..."

"What exactly are you going to do about it?"

The entire marketplace froze.

Everyone stared at the unbelievable scene.

A girl...

Standing alone before Vikraal.

Looking directly into his eyes.

Holding him at gunpoint.

People no longer worried about the man tied behind the jeep.

Now...

They were worried about her.

Abhavya raised her revolver slightly before speaking in a calm but commanding voice.

"Release that man."

Before Vikraal could answer, one of his loyal men stepped forward.

This was Radhe.

He glared at Abhavya angrily.

"What nonsense are you talking about?"

"Do you even know whose jeep you shot at?"

"How dare you point a gun at Dada?"

"You've just signed your own death warrant."

Radhe immediately moved forward to grab her.

But before he could touch her...

A strong hand stopped him.

Vikraal.

Without even looking at Radhe, he signaled him to step back.

"Enough."

"I'm talking to Madam."

"Who gave you permission to interrupt?"

Radhe instantly froze.

Although unwilling...

He obediently stepped back.

Vikraal's attention returned to Abhavya.

For the first time in years...

Someone stood before him without fear.

Without hesitation.

Without lowering their eyes.

Most people couldn't survive five seconds under his gaze.

Yet this girl...

Refused to blink.

A faint smile appeared on Vikraal's lips.

"So tell me, Madam..."

"What if I refuse to release him?"

Abhavya didn't answer with words.

She calmly lifted her revolver...

And aimed it directly between his eyes.

Her voice remained steady.

"Do you still have the courage to say that?"

The crowd collectively gasped.

Even Radhe lost his composure.

"Dada!"

"This girl has gone too far."

"Let me teach her a lesson."

He rushed toward Abhavya once again, grabbing her by the collar.

But before he could do anything...

A powerful punch landed squarely on his back.

Radhe stumbled forward in pain.

He turned around in disbelief.

"D-Dada...?"

Vikraal looked at him coldly.

"I told you..."

"I'm talking."

"So who exactly gave you permission to interfere?"

Radhe rubbed his aching back.

"But Dada..."

One glance from Vikraal was enough.

Radhe immediately lowered his head and fell silent.

Watching everything unfold...

Abhavya finally understood.

So this was Vikraal.

The man because of whom fifteen ASPs had already been transferred.

The man who ruled Darbhanga more than the police themselves.

The city's biggest criminal.

Vikraal casually pointed toward the terrified man still tied behind the jeep.

"Madam Officer..."

"Would you mind telling me..."

"Why you're so determined to save him?"

Without taking her eyes off Vikraal, Abhavya reached into her pocket and pulled out her official police identity card.

Holding it before him, she declared confidently,

"My name is Abhavya Mehra."

"I am the newly appointed Assistant Superintendent of Police of Darbhanga."

"So tell me..."

"Is that reason enough?"

"Because freeing innocent people from monsters like you..."

"...is my duty."

Her voice echoed across the marketplace.

People immediately began whispering.

"She's the new ASP?"

"A woman?"

"Seriously?"

Many couldn't believe what they were seeing.

In a city where girls were rarely allowed to pursue higher education...

Seeing a young woman become an IPS officer felt almost unbelievable.

The murmurs grew louder.

Vikraal frowned in irritation.

Without warning...

Bang!

He fired a bullet straight into the sky.

The crowd instantly scattered in every direction.

Within seconds...

The once-crowded marketplace was almost empty.

Abhavya looked around in disbelief.

She couldn't understand what shocked her more—

The terrified citizens...

Or the fact that this man openly fired a gun without fearing the law.

Before she could say anything else...

The injured man tied behind the jeep suddenly noticed the distraction.

Gathering every ounce of strength left inside him, he tried to run.

He barely managed a few steps.

Bang!

Another gunshot echoed through the street.

This time...

The bullet struck his forehead.

The man collapsed instantly.

Dead.

Abhavya's eyes widened.

She hadn't expected Vikraal to murder someone...

Right in front of a police officer.

For the first time...

Anger completely replaced her composure.

She immediately pointed her revolver back at Vikraal.

"How dare you?"

"You murdered a man..."

"Right in front of the police!"

Without waiting for a response, she pulled a pair of handcuffs from her pocket and firmly locked them around Vikraal's wrists.

Click.

The metallic sound echoed through the silent road.

Radhe stared at the scene in complete disbelief.

His Dada...

The man whom nobody had ever managed to arrest...

Was quietly allowing a newly appointed female officer to handcuff him.

Not even once...

Did he resist.

Abhavya immediately called for the police jeep.

Within minutes...

Vikraal was seated inside it.

As the vehicle drove toward the police station, Vikraal remained unusually calm.

Instead of worrying about his arrest...

He simply kept looking at Abhavya.

Almost as though he were searching for something hidden behind her fearless eyes.

Leaning comfortably against the seat, he asked with a lazy smile,

"Madam Officer..."

"Is this your first posting?"

Abhavya shot him a furious glare.

Her eyes burned with anger.

"You're unbelievable."

"You murdered someone right in front of me..."

"And you're sitting here as if nothing happened."

"Is there even a shred of humanity left inside you?"

Vikraal laughed loudly.

The sound echoed inside the police jeep.

When his laughter finally faded, he looked at her with an unreadable smile.

"Madam..."

"You should apply for a transfer."

"This city..."

"...isn't meant for decent people like you."
